The S.S. Badger was the last coal-burning passenger steamer on the Great Lakes and recently pulled away from this port town on what might be one of its last cruises.

After almost 60 years of steaming across Lake Michigan, the 411-foot-long ferry connecting Manitowoc with Ludington, Mich., is fighting the threat of shutdown. While foes are pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to stop the boat from dumping coal-ash slurry into the lake, fans are applying legislative pressure to let the ship live on.
