PortsbyBoat.com was developed to make port-level information available to boaters and cruisers to make their cruising more enjoyable. The information is updated by our user community so each port includes a variety of information depending on how active the users are within that specific port. Users can update ports with information from marinas with transient slips to the best snorkeling site to the safest public moorings.

Anyone can add information just by signing up as a user. Users are encouraged to add information so other boaters will know what is available at any given port. Your port can be what you and others in your community make of it. A user can request to be upgraded to contributor level. A contributor can update information including tips, advice and photos about the port itself and, if desired, information about the body of water.

You do not have to be the owner of the business or service in order to add it, however the owner can claim the service as their own and buy additional space for advertising.


The Control Box

Information is added via the Control Box. After you log in, you will see the Control Box in the right-hand sidebar of any page that can be updated. The plus sign is the indicator that you can add an item. The pencil is the indicator that you can update an item.

For example, if you have navigated to the port of Holland, Michigan and wish to add ABC Marina, look for the Control Box in the right-hand sidebar. Note: you must be logged in to the system in order to see the Control Box. Click on plus sign Add a Service. This will take you to the Service Update page. Enter the information, then click the Add button. After a successful add, click Go Back to the port of Holland. You should now see ABC Marina on Holland's Port page. Click on ABC Marina to see detailed information about the service. You are now viewing the service information page. To change information for ABC Marina, click on pencil ABC Marina while you are viewing the service information. This will take you to the same Service Update page that you used to add the service. Make your changes, then click the Update button. Click Go Back to ABC Marina service page. This example is common to most of the pages on our site.

 
 
Q: How can I add or update information?
A: To add or update information on the site, you must first become a user. You will see an Control Box at the top of the right-hand sidebar for any pages that you are allowed to add information. Please note: You must be logged in to the system in order to see the Control Box.
 
Q: How do I add a service?
A: Search or navigate to the port where the service you wish to add is located. Click on 'Add a Service' in the Control Box located on the right-hand sidebar. To add a worldwide service not specific to any port, go to Marine Services top menu tab and click on 'Add a Service' in the Control Box.
 
Q: How do I update an existing service?
A: Search or navigate to the port and click on the desired service or select the service from the Marine Services menu tab. Click on 'Update (service name)' in the Control Box located on the right-hand sidebar.
 
Q: How do I add a worldwide service that is not associated with a specific port?
A: Select Marine Services menu tab. Click on 'Add a Service' in the Control Box located on the right-hand sidebar.
 
Q: How do I lock a service to my username so that no one else can update it?
A: Navigate to your service information page, click on 'Update (service name)' in the right-hand sidebar. Scroll down until you see the question asking if you are the owner of the service. Click 'Yes' and then 'Update'. The service will be locked to the current user.
 
Q: What kind of services can be added?
A: Services include marinas, public anchorages, public moorings, restaurants, lodging, snorkel and dive sites, and much more. Anything that you feel would benefit the boating community in making their trip more enjoyable. Select Marine Services menu tab to see a complete list. If you have a suggestion for a new service, please contact us.
 
Q: How do I add an event?
A: Navigate to the port where your event takes place. Click on 'Add an Event' in the Control Box located on the right-hand sidebar.
 
Q: How do I update an existing event?
A: Navigate to the event information page either from the Port Information page or Waterfront Events in the top menu bar. Click on 'Update (event name)' in the right-hand sidebar.
 
Q: How do I add a group trip or flotilla?
A: A trip can be added either as a public or private trip. Public trips are open to the public and will appear under Group Trips in the top menu bar. Private trips can only be accessed from your User Main page. To add a trip or flotilla, navigate to the body of water or port that you will begin your trip. Click on 'Add a Trip' in the Control Box located on the right-hand sidebar.
